Cabinets of Curiosity
Clifton Park Museum
Rotherham S65 2AA
Exhibition Dates 22nd March – 15th May
Opening Times: Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm in March and 10am to 5pm from 1st April. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. The Museum is also open on Mondays during Rotherham school holidays and on Bank Holidays.
Operating under the banner of CP Studio, six Rotherham-based artists: Kevan Cadman, Neath Champion-Shorr (she/her), Ken Horne, Tair Rafiq, Uzma Rani and Teresa Sayner have been working with Sheffield-based artist Paul Evans to develop a collective response to the Clifton Park Museum collection. The aim has been to draw out unexpected, imaginative connections between natural and man-made objects, and how ideas of ‘heritage’ can interweave with environmental concerns and contemporary responses to nature.
Invited through ROAR (Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance), each artist has been given a micro-commission and has attended a number of 'idea-jams' at Clifton Park Museum and archives. A theme of 'Cabinets of Curiosity' has been mutually chosen for this body of work. The artists have developed an eclectic range of responses including: Champion-Shorr’s choreography, which fuses and intertwines northern soul movements and contemporary dance in an art film hosting pieces created by the collective; Sayner’s pattern book based on Rockingham Pottery and tree of life based on the Centenary Beech in Clifton Park; Cadman’s mask based on the green man from Rotherham Minster; Rani’s painted, origami butterflies; Horne’s narwhal tusk; Evans’s Ice Age (Pleistocene) artefacts fashioned in Plasticine and Rafiq’s texts based on vintage typewriters.
About the artists:
Kevan is an artist originally from Sheffield, now based in Rotherham. Working predominantly as a printmaker and sculptor, he is inspired by ancient myths, legends and folklore; particularly the place they occupy in our understanding of the modern world.
Neath describes herself as a Choreographer and Movement Director, but her experience and expertise span across the realms of art and performance.
Fearing pretentious hyperbole Ken would prefer to say his work involves "cobbling stuff together" and leave it at that. Pressed further, he might comment on how he layers contrasting textures and materials to build pieces with message and meaning, amusing himself in the process.
Tair is a self-taught story maker and world builder. He has been writing since the age of 8 and has lots of worlds to share.
Uzma is a Rotherham based abstract/impressionist artist and calligrapher, working predominantly with alcohol ink and acrylic/oil paint. Uzma creates mixed media art inspired by nature and her surroundings, as well as her cultural heritage and religion.
Teresa is a mixed media artist from Rotherham. Teresa uses layers of paper, lithography, colour and pattern to express connection to her subjects and attempts to trap their essence within her work.
Paul is an artist based in Sheffield. Paul works in a variety of media ranging from drawing to virtual reality and has a particular interest in working with people to explore science, nature and ideas of heritage in their broadest sense.
