FUNDRAISING - GENDERED INTELLIGENCE

Hello.

On Saturday 8th July, I will be taking part in the Peak District 25k Challenge in Bakewell to raise money for the charity GENDERED INTELLIGENCE. My friend Zoyander has kindly written the following to explain more about the issues facing trans people today and why help is needed.

My name is Zoyander Street. I am a transgender artist-researcher and a PhD student in Sociology at Lancaster University. I have had the honour of participating in the GIANTS programme with Gendered Intelligence, which provides training and practical support to trans advocates and activists.

This is an extraordinarily difficult time for trans people. Although increased visibility has improved social acceptance in some spheres, at the same time we have become one of the latest scapegoats in the culture war, and that has brought with it rollbacks in our civil rights and increased interpersonal and institutional violence directed at us.

The new generation of young trans people faces an unprecedented crackdown on their ability to transition, medically or even socially. Although young people have been the focus of anti-trans legislation, similar restrictions are impacting adults as well. We know from decades of research that delaying or denying a person's access to gender-affirming care has a serious impact on their mental health, leading to startlingly high rates of suicide, self harm, and substance use disorders.

Gendered Intelligence is doing vital work to allow trans people to thrive as much as possible in what can feel like an increasingly hostile environment. Their direct provision of services for trans and gender-questioning young people includes youth work, residentials, mentoring, and dedicated support for parents. They also provide training to a wide range of organisations to allow more workplaces and services to be safe spaces for trans employees and clients. Crucially, at a time when so much misinformation is being spread about the trans community, Gendered Intelligence works in the policy and media spheres to advocate for us.

Thank you.
